CAN Fertilizer 27% N splits its nitrogen roughly evenly between nitrate, which the crop takes up as soon as it dissolves, and ammonium, which releases over the following weeks. The ammonium nitrate is diluted with calcium carbonate or dolomite, giving around 8% calcium as CaO and making the product safer to store and transport than straight ammonium nitrate at equivalent nitrogen. Being a physical mixture rather than a single compound, fertilizer-grade CAN has no single CAS number; its components are ammonium nitrate (CAS 6484-52-2) and calcium carbonate (CAS 471-34-1). That calcium also means CAN does not push soil pH down the way urea and ammonium sulphate do, which is why it is the preferred top dressing on acidic ground. Granules run 2-4 mm, moisture at or below 0.5%. It is an oxidiser and is stored away from fuel, oil and combustible material; nitrate storage and notification rules apply in many jurisdictions and are confirmed before dispatch. Where can fertilizer 27% n is used

CAN gives half its nitrogen as nitrate, available to the crop straight away, and half as ammonium, which releases more slowly. The calcium alongside it means the product does not push soil pH down the way most nitrogen fertilizers do.

Handling and storage
