Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer 34.5% N splits its nitrogen evenly between nitrate and ammonium, so half the dose is available to the crop as soon as it dissolves. CAS 6484-52-2, formula NH4NO3. At 34.5% nitrogen it moves and spreads less material than CAN for the same nitrogen delivered, which is what recommends it on large hectarages and long haul routes. Granules or prills run 2-4 mm, coated against caking, with moisture at or below 0.3%. This is fertilizer grade, not the porous technical grade used in explosive manufacture. The two are made, licensed and transported differently and are not interchangeable. It is classified as an oxidising solid, UN 2067, class 5.1, and carries storage, security and record-keeping obligations in most jurisdictions. Handling and storage

An oxidiser and a regulated material. Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated building away from fuel, oil, organic matter, acids, chlorides and any source of heat, and keep it out of contact with metals that promote decomposition. Contamination, rather than the product on its own, is what turns a fertilizer store into an incident.
