Description

Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies 2-Hydroxyethyl Acrylate (2-HEA) (CAS 818-61-1) to manufacturers, water treatment plants and industrial processors. Enquiries for 2-Hydroxyethyl Acrylate are quoted against this listing. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.

2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate is a hydroxy-functional acrylate monomer used to introduce crosslinking sites into acrylic resins, coatings, and pressure-sensitive adhesives, and is common in UV/EB-curable formulations. It’s a skin/eye irritant and a suspected sensitizer, so it should be handled with gloves, goggles, and good ventilation, and stored with a polymerization inhibitor intact.

Where 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate is used

  • Hydroxy-functional monomer in UV-curable coatings and inks
  • Reactive diluent in radiation-cure formulations
  • Adhesive and pressure-sensitive adhesive polymers
  • Intermediate for urethane acrylate oligomer synthesis
  • Superabsorbent and hydrogel polymer manufacture

Key features

  • CAS 818-61-1, C5H8O3.
  • Also ordered as Hydroxyethyl acrylate, Ethylene glycol monoacrylate, Bisomer 2HEA.
  • Packed to your requirement, inhibited, with inhibitor level and water content on the certificate.

Specification and grade

2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate, CAS 818-61-1, formula C₅H₈O₃, a clear liquid supplied inhibited with MEHQ. As an acrylate it is markedly more reactive than the corresponding methacrylate, which makes it fast in UV cure and correspondingly less forgiving in storage.

Handling and storage

Corrosive and a strong skin sensitiser — 2-HEA is one of the more aggressive acrylates in this respect and a recognised cause of occupational contact dermatitis. Handle with nitrile gloves changed frequently and no bare-hand contact. It polymerises exothermically once inhibitor is depleted; store cool below 25°C, dark, with an air headspace, away from peroxides, amines, acids and metal salts. It is hygroscopic and hydrolyses slowly in the presence of water.

Packaging and supply

Packed to your requirement, inhibited, with inhibitor level and water content on the certificate. Order to consumption — shelf life is measured in months, and it shortens sharply in a warm store.

Common questions

Why is 2-HEA more hazardous to handle than the methacrylate?

Acrylates are more electrophilic than methacrylates, which makes them both more reactive in polymerisation and more reactive with skin proteins. 2-HEA is classified corrosive and is a potent sensitiser; the methacrylate equivalent is an irritant. Glove and skin discipline has to reflect that.

How should it be stored?

Below 25°C, dark, with an air headspace so the MEHQ inhibitor stays active, and segregated from peroxides, amines, acids and metal salts. Check inhibitor level if the material has been held longer than the stated shelf life.

What does water do to it?

It slowly hydrolyses the ester to acrylic acid and ethylene glycol, raising acid value and changing cure behaviour. In UV systems that shows up as slower cure and poorer adhesion. Keep containers sealed and check water content on long-held stock.
