Sulphuric acid at 98% is about as concentrated as this acid gets in commercial supply, appearing as a dense, oily, slightly yellowish liquid that draws moisture from the air readily. It’s central to fertilizer production, ore leaching, battery electrolyte, and countless downstream chemical syntheses because of its strong acidity and dehydrating power. Mixing it with water releases substantial heat, so the acid always goes into water and never the reverse, and full acid-resistant PPE is standard for any handling. GCS supplies it in a range of drum sizes with deposits refunded on return of the container.

Specification and grade

Industrial-grade sulphuric acid at 98%, CAS 7664-93-9, a clear colourless to slightly yellowish oily liquid, hygroscopic, density 1.84 g/cm³ at 25°C. It boils at 290°C and freezes near 3°C. A 5 g/L dilution reads pH 1.2.

Handling and storage

Signal word Danger: H290 corrosive to metals, H314 severe skin burns and eye damage. The dilution rule is the one that causes injuries — always add acid to water, never water to acid, and dilute slowly with cooling, because the heat of dilution can boil the mixture and throw concentrated acid out of the vessel. At 98% it passivates carbon steel and can be stored in it; diluted acid attacks steel aggressively, so a tank suited to 98% is the wrong tank for 30%. Keep it dry: it is hygroscopic and absorbs water from the air.
