Description
Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) (CAS 2720-73-2) to mines, concentrators and mineral processing plants. Enquiries for Potassium Amyl Xanthate are quoted against this listing. It is supplied as assay >=90%. Packaging: 25kg plastic-lined woven bags, fiber drums, palletized units. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.
Potassium amyl xanthate is an organosulfur collector that makes sulfide mineral surfaces hydrophobic, which is what lets flotation cells separate valuable minerals from waste rock. It works across a wide pH range, roughly 5 to 12, and performs well on copper, zinc, lead, and gold-bearing sulfide ores. GCS supplies it at 90% minimum purity as a yellowish powder or pelletized product, packed in plastic-lined bags or fiber drums to protect against moisture. Every order ships with a certificate of analysis and safety data sheet.
Where potassium amyl xanthate is used
- Primary collector for sulphide flotation of copper, lead, zinc and nickel
- Pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation in gold pre-concentration
- Bulk sulphide rougher circuits where a strong, non-selective collector is wanted
- Recovery of tarnished and partially oxidised sulphide minerals
Key features
- >=90% assay. Yellowish powder or pellets.
- CAS 2720-73-2, C5H11OCS2K.
- Also ordered as Amyl potassium xanthate, Potassium pentylxanthate, Aeroxanthate.
- Supplied in 25kg plastic-lined woven bags, fiber drums, palletized units, with larger units quoted on request.
Specification and grade
Potassium amyl xanthate at minimum 90% purity, CAS 2720-73-2, supplied as yellowish powder or pellets and effective across pH 5 to 12. PAX is the strongest and least selective of the common alkyl xanthates: it recovers more, including more gangue, than the shorter-chain ethyl and isopropyl grades.
Handling and storage
Xanthates decompose in the presence of moisture, heat or acid, releasing carbon disulphide — which is both flammable and toxic, and is the source of the characteristic smell. Decomposition is exothermic and self-accelerating, so a wet or hot bag is a fire risk rather than just a spoiled bag. Store cool, dry, sealed and away from acids and oxidisers, and make up solution fresh: prepared xanthate solution loses strength within days.
Packaging and supply
Packed in 25kg plastic-lined woven bags, fibre drums and palletised units. Because solution strength decays, order to your consumption rate rather than holding long stock, and tell us your make-up schedule so pack size matches it.

Common questions
PAX, SIBX or SEX — which collector should I use?
Chain length sets the trade-off. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) is the strongest and least selective, which suits difficult or partly oxidised sulphides and bulk roughers. Shorter chains such as SIBX and SEX are more selective and are preferred where gangue rejection matters more than absolute recovery. Most circuits settle this with plant trials rather than from a datasheet.
Why does the xanthate smell so strongly?
Carbon disulphide from slow decomposition. A faint smell is normal; a strong one from a sealed bag means moisture or heat has got in and the material is degrading. Check the storage conditions before making up another batch.
How long does made-up solution last?
Days, not weeks, and less in warm or alkaline make-up water. Prepare it fresh to your daily consumption; stale solution under-collects and the dosage correction people make for it is usually wrong.
