Description

Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies Nitric Acid 55-60% (CAS 7697-37-2) to mines, concentrators and mineral processing plants. It is supplied as technical grade. Packaging: 34kg, 273kg, 1350kg (drum cost refundable). Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.

Nitric acid in the 55 to 60 percent range is a strong, oxidizing mineral acid used in metal etching, fertilizer intermediates, and various ore leaching and digestion processes. It appears as a transparent liquid that can take on a yellowish tint as it ages or is exposed to light, a sign of dissolved nitrogen oxides. The acid is aggressively corrosive to metals and tissue alike, and its fumes irritate the respiratory tract, so it calls for acid-resistant storage and PPE at every handling step. GCS ships it in 34kg, 273kg, and 1350kg drums with the container deposit refunded on return.

Where nitric acid 55-60% is used

  • Passivation and pickling of stainless steel
  • Fertiliser and nitrate salt manufacture
  • Metal etching and electronics cleaning
  • Ore digestion and assay work in mineral laboratories
  • Nitration feedstock in specialty chemical synthesis

Key features

  • Technical grade. Transparent, colourless to yellowish, corrosive liquid.
  • CAS 7697-37-2, HNO3.
  • Also ordered as Nitric Acid, Azotic acid, Aqua fortis.
  • Supplied in 34kg, 273kg, 1350kg (drum cost refundable), with larger units quoted on request.
  • Classified Danger (H272, H290, H314, H318, H319). Current SDS ships with every consignment.

Specification and grade

Technical-grade nitric acid at 55–60%, CAS 7697-37-2, a transparent colourless to yellowish corrosive liquid. The yellow deepens with age and warmth as dissolved nitrogen dioxide forms; this is normal for stored nitric acid and is not itself a rejection criterion.

Handling and storage

A strong oxidiser as well as a strong acid — H272 may intensify fire, H290 may corrode metals, H314 severe skin burns and eye damage, and it is corrosive to the respiratory tract. Segregate it from organics, solvents, sawdust and combustible packaging: a spill onto pallet wood is a fire, not just a clean-up. Store cool and shaded in dedicated bunding. Nitric acid is one of the few acids where 304/316 stainless performs well; avoid copper, brass and most elastomers.

Packaging and supply

Supplied in 34kg, 273kg and 1350kg containers with a refundable drum deposit. Because of the oxidiser classification, confirm your storage segregation before the first delivery — we would rather resolve that at quotation stage than at your gate.

Common questions

The acid has turned yellow in store. Is it still usable?

Yes, in most industrial duties. The colour is dissolved nitrogen dioxide formed by light and warmth. It matters where the process is colour- or NOx-sensitive; for passivation and general pickling it does not. Store cool and out of direct light to slow it.

What must nitric acid never be stored beside?

Organics and combustibles — solvents, oils, wood, paper, sawdust — and reducing agents. It is an oxidiser, so the fire risk comes from what is next to it rather than from the acid alone.

Which metals can I use for the transfer line?

304 or 316 stainless steel handles nitric acid well at these strengths, which is unusual among the mineral acids. Avoid copper, brass, and elastomers not rated for strong oxidisers.
