Description
Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies Glutaraldehyde 50% Industrial Grade (CAS 111-30-8) to manufacturers, water treatment plants and industrial processors. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.
Glutaraldehyde is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial aldehyde used to disinfect industrial water systems, as a biocide in oilfield injection water, a preservative in various industrial formulations, and (in dilute clinical grades) for cold sterilization of medical equipment. It’s a strong irritant/sensitizer, so respiratory and skin protection is essential, and it should be stored sealed away from heat.
Where glutaraldehyde 50% industrial grade is used
- Biocide in oilfield water, drilling and fracturing fluids
- Microbiological control in cooling water and process systems
- Leather tanning and hide preservation
- Paper mill slime control
- Industrial disinfection where a broad-spectrum, fast-acting biocide is required
Key features
- CAS 111-30-8, C5H8O2.
- Also ordered as Glutaraldehyde, Pentanedial, Glutaral.
- Packed to your requirement at 50%.
Specification and grade
Glutaraldehyde at 50%, CAS 111-30-8, formula C₅H₈O₂, supplied as a clear, pale-yellow aqueous solution with a pungent odour. Activity is pH-dependent: it is most biocidal in the alkaline range, but alkaline solutions polymerise and lose activity within days, which is why it is supplied acidic and activated at the point of use.
Handling and storage
Toxic if inhaled, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and is both a skin and a respiratory sensitiser with a very low occupational exposure limit. Vapour control is the governing requirement — glutaraldehyde is a documented cause of occupational asthma in healthcare and industry alike. Handle in closed systems or under extraction, never in an unventilated room. Store cool, sealed and dark, away from oxidisers, ammonia and amines, which it reacts with.
Packaging and supply
Packed to your requirement at 50%. Because the exposure limit is low, we will ask how the product is dosed before quoting — closed-loop injection is straightforward; open decanting usually is not acceptable.

Common questions
Why is it supplied acidic if it works best alkaline?
Alkaline glutaraldehyde is the most biocidal form but it polymerises and loses activity within days. Acidic solutions are stable for long storage. Alkaline activation is done at the point of use, and activated solution has a short working life.
How serious is the inhalation hazard?
Serious enough to govern the whole handling design. Glutaraldehyde has a very low exposure limit and is a respiratory sensitiser strongly associated with occupational asthma. Closed dosing or full extraction is required; a fume in a poorly ventilated plant room is a real exposure.
What neutralises a spill?
Glycine or a similar amino compound reacts with the aldehyde and deactivates it, which is the standard spill treatment. Do not simply flush to drain — glutaraldehyde is toxic to aquatic life and discharge is usually consented.
