Description
Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies 2-Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate (2-HPMA) to manufacturers, water treatment plants and industrial processors. Enquiries for 2-Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate are quoted against this listing. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.
2-Hydroxypropyl methacrylate is a reactive monomer that copolymerizes readily with other acrylates, contributing hydroxyl functionality used to crosslink or further modify coating and adhesive resins. It also appears in some dental-composite and specialty polymer formulations. Flammable and an eye/skin irritant — handle with standard monomer-handling precautions and store away from heat and initiators.
Where 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate is used
- Hydroxy-functional comonomer in thermosetting acrylic resins
- Automotive and industrial two-pack polyurethane coatings
- Dental and biomedical polymer formulation
- Adhesive and sealant resin manufacture
- Crosslinkable emulsion polymers for coatings
Specification and grade
2-Hydroxypropyl methacrylate, formula C₇H₁₂O₃, a clear low-viscosity liquid supplied inhibited with MEHQ. Commercial material is a mixture of the 2-hydroxypropyl and 2-hydroxyisopropyl isomers. The pendant hydroxyl is the working part: it survives the acrylic polymerisation and then reacts with isocyanate or melamine to crosslink the film.
Handling and storage
Causes skin and eye irritation and is a skin sensitiser — methacrylates are well-documented sensitisers and the risk is cumulative. The material polymerises exothermically if the inhibitor is depleted, and MEHQ requires dissolved oxygen to function, so a nitrogen-blanketed drum is the wrong storage: use an air headspace. Store cool, below 25°C, dark, and away from peroxides, amines and metal salts. Never allow a container to sit hot.
Packaging and supply
Packed to your requirement, inhibited, with the inhibitor level stated on the certificate. Tell us your storage temperature and turnover — this is a product where holding stock through a hot season is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

Common questions
Why must the drum have an air headspace rather than nitrogen?
MEHQ, the standard inhibitor for acrylates and methacrylates, only works in the presence of dissolved oxygen. Blanketing with nitrogen removes the oxygen and disables the inhibitor, which is the opposite of what the operator intends. Keep an air headspace and do not seal the drum under inert gas.
What happens if it polymerises in the container?
The reaction is strongly exothermic and self-accelerating, and it can rupture a drum. Warning signs are warmth, thickening and a rise in viscosity. Isolate a suspect container, keep it cool and ventilated, and do not move or open it if it is warm.
HPMA or HEMA — which hydroxy monomer?
HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is more reactive and more hydrophilic; HPMA has a secondary hydroxyl that reacts more slowly with isocyanate, giving longer pot life in a two-pack system, and it gives a slightly more hydrophobic film. The choice is normally about pot life and water resistance.
