Description

Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies Diethylene Glycol (DEG) (CAS 111-46-6) to manufacturers, water treatment plants and industrial processors. Enquiries for Diethylene Glycol are quoted against this listing. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.

Diethylene glycol is a hygroscopic, low-volatility glycol used as a solvent and coupling agent in industrial processes, as a raw material for unsaturated polyester resins and plasticizers, and in gas dehydration/glycol dehydration units. It is toxic if ingested, so strict segregation from food/consumer applications and standard chemical-handling controls apply.

Where diethylene glycol is used

  • Polyester resin and polyurethane manufacture
  • Gas dehydration in natural gas processing
  • Humectant in tobacco, cork and adhesive formulations
  • Solvent for dyes, resins and printing inks
  • Heat transfer and brine fluid formulation

Key features

  • CAS 111-46-6, C4H10O3.
  • Also ordered as Diethylene Glycol, Diglycol, Diethylenglykol.
  • Packed to your requirement.

Specification and grade

Diethylene glycol, CAS 111-46-6, formula C₄H₁₀O₃ — a clear, colourless, hygroscopic liquid with low volatility and complete water miscibility. It is the workhorse glycol for polyester manufacture and for gas dehydration where triethylene glycol’s higher boiling point is not required.

Handling and storage

Harmful if swallowed — and this is the point that governs everything else about it. Diethylene glycol is acutely toxic by ingestion and has caused mass poisonings when substituted for glycerine or propylene glycol in medicines and food. It must never be used in any food, pharmaceutical or personal care application, and it must be stored and labelled so that substitution cannot happen. Otherwise it is a stable, low-hazard industrial liquid.

Packaging and supply

Packed to your requirement. Where the site also holds propylene glycol or glycerine, we strongly recommend segregated storage and distinct labelling — the substitution incidents on record all began with two similar-looking drums in one store.

Common questions

Can diethylene glycol replace propylene glycol?

No, and the distinction is a safety-critical one. Diethylene glycol is acutely toxic by ingestion and has caused fatal poisonings when substituted into medicines, toothpaste and food products. Propylene glycol is the approved material for those uses. Never substitute one for the other.

DEG or TEG for gas dehydration?

Triethylene glycol is the standard for most field dehydration because its higher boiling point allows a hotter regeneration and a drier gas. Diethylene glycol is used where lower regeneration temperature is preferred or where hydrate inhibition rather than deep drying is the duty.

Why does the level rise in an open drum?

It is hygroscopic and absorbs atmospheric moisture, which also dilutes it. For dehydration duty in particular, water pickup in storage directly reduces performance. Keep containers sealed and use a desiccant breather on a storage tank.
