This 98% flaked sodium hydroxide grade is used across chemical manufacturing (soap/detergent production, pulp and paper processing, textile treatment), water treatment pH adjustment, and general industrial neutralization. Highly corrosive to skin and eyes and reactive with water (exothermic) — full PPE and dry, sealed storage away from moisture and acids are required.

Specification and grade
Sodium hydroxide flakes at 98%, CAS 1310-73-2. The two percentage points against the 99% grade rarely matter in bulk neutralisation duty and the material is normally cheaper per tonne; they do matter where the dose is calculated tightly or where the balance is carbonate rather than water.
Handling and storage
Corrosive to skin, eyes and metals, deliquescent, and strongly exothermic on dissolution. Add flake to water, not water to flake. Exclude aluminium, zinc and tin from tanks, lines and fittings. Store sealed, off the floor, away from acids — neutralisation in a store is violent — and provide an eyewash and safety shower at the make-up point.

Common questions
When does the difference between 98% and 99% matter?
Where the dose is calculated closely, where the process is sensitive to carbonate, or where you are paying freight on a long haul and want the most NaOH per tonne shipped. For general effluent neutralisation, 98% is normally the better buy.
What is the remaining 2%?
Mostly water and sodium carbonate formed by reaction with atmospheric CO₂, with small amounts of chloride and sulphate. The certificate of analysis states the breakdown for the batch supplied.
Can it be stored outdoors?
Not in bag form. Sodium hydroxide is deliquescent and a bag left outside absorbs enough moisture to turn to slurry and leak caustic liquid. Bagged product needs a dry, covered store.
