Handling and storage

Harmful if swallowed, causes skin and eye irritation, and — the significant point — contact with acid liberates hydrogen sulphide and thioglycolic acid vapour. It oxidises in air to the disulphide, losing reducing power, so containers must be kept sealed and preferably blanketed. Store cool, dry, sealed, away from acids and oxidisers, with ventilation. The characteristic mercaptan odour is detectable far below any hazardous concentration.
