Description
Gandi Chemical Solutions supplies Acrolein Dimethyl Acetal (3,3-Dimethoxypropene-1) ≥98% (CAS 6044-68-4) to manufacturers, water treatment plants and industrial processors. Enquiries for Acrolein Dimethyl Acetal 98% are quoted against this listing. Priced by quotation, with a current safety data sheet on every consignment.
Acrolein dimethyl acetal is the dimethyl acetal-protected form of acrolein, used in organic synthesis where the reactive aldehyde needs to be masked until a later synthetic step — common in pharmaceutical intermediate and fine-chemical production. Flammable and moisture-sensitive; store sealed away from acids and heat.
Where acrolein dimethyl acetal 98% is used
- Protected acrolein equivalent in multi-step organic synthesis
- Intermediate in pharmaceutical and agrochemical manufacture
- Building block for heterocyclic and fragrance chemistry
- Reagent where free acrolein is too hazardous or too reactive to handle
Key features
- CAS 6044-68-4, C5H10O2.
- Also ordered as Acrolein dimethyl acetal, Wln: 1Oyo1&1U1.
- Packed to your requirement at minimum 98%.
Specification and grade
Acrolein dimethyl acetal — 3,3-dimethoxypropene-1 — at minimum 98%, CAS 6044-68-4, formula C₅H₁₀O₂. The acetal masks the highly reactive aldehyde of acrolein, giving a far more manageable liquid that releases acrolein chemistry only on acid hydrolysis, at the point in the sequence where it is wanted.
Handling and storage
Flammable, and hydrolysed by acid and moisture to release acrolein — which is acutely toxic, a severe lachrymator and a potent respiratory irritant. That is the controlling risk: keep the material dry and away from acid, because an acid or water leak in storage generates the hazard the acetal exists to avoid. Store cool, dark and sealed under inert gas, in a ventilated flammables area.
Packaging and supply
Packed to your requirement at minimum 98%. Because the hydrolysis product is the hazard, the safety data sheet is issued with the quotation and we will confirm storage arrangements before first supply.

Common questions
Why use the acetal instead of acrolein itself?
Acrolein is acutely toxic, extremely lachrymatory and polymerises readily. The dimethyl acetal is a stable, storable liquid that delivers the same three-carbon electrophilic unit, unmasked by mild acid hydrolysis at the step where it is needed.
What happens if it gets wet?
Water alone hydrolyses it slowly; water with any acid present hydrolyses it quickly and releases acrolein. Keep containers dry, sealed and segregated from acids, and treat a suspected wet container as a potential acrolein release.
How is it deprotected in synthesis?
Mild aqueous acid, typically dilute mineral or organic acid at or below room temperature, regenerates the aldehyde. Conditions are chosen to be tolerable to the rest of the molecule; the acetal is deliberately easy to remove.
